Against the backdrop of a country rocked by anti-apartheid riots and a tense home life with an alcoholic father, she turned to a love of reading to find inner peace in the midst of turmoil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Phalime\u2019s thirst for knowledge drove her to set her sights on becoming a doctor, a dream she realised in 1999 &#8211; completing &nbsp;her MBChB in Medicine at the University of Cape Town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI worked really hard to get into medical school, and throughout my time there I studied hard and did well. But after what she describes as a \u201chellish\u201d experience in the South African public healthcare system, <strong>she made a bold decision to leave medicine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her decision came as a surprise to many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople wanted to know why I left, and the voice in my own head was getting louder.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Out of this search for answers, Dr Phalime turned to her love of literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Telling Her Story<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI knew I had a story in me, but I didn\u2019t know how to tell it. I saw the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getsmarter.com\/courses\/za\/rhs-writing-a-non-fiction-story-short-course\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GetSmarter Non-Fiction online short course<\/a>, and I decided to enroll. At first I didn\u2019t know what I would write about, but the course helped to coax my memoir out of me\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"show-for-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/niLYLZ07Cj4\" width=\"970\" height=\"545\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"show-for-small-only\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/niLYLZ07Cj4\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><sup><em>Dr Maria Phalime shares her experience on the GetSmarter Write a Non-Fiction Story online short course<\/em><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The resulting book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariaphalime.co.za\/postmortem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Postmortem: The Doctor Who Walked Awa<\/em>y<\/a>, is a personal account of the pressures and traumas that come with being a doctor in South Africa &#8211; and her decision to walk away. The memoir won the City Press Non-fiction Award in 2012, and was shortlisted for the Alan Paton Award in 2015. Her first fiction novel, <em>Second Chances<\/em>, published in 2013 &nbsp;received the Maskew Miller Longman Literature Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had a lot of raw material, but at first I didn\u2019t know how to turn it into a narrative. The course \u2013 and the guidance of Mike Nicol \u2013 helped me to develop a narrative that would engage readers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div>\n            <!-- Responsive picture tag -->\n        <picture class=\"picture-block\">\n            <source media=\"(min-width: 768px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.getsmarter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/NPS_DrMariaPhalime__PullQuotes-04.png\" >\n            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.getsmarter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/NPS_DrMariaPhalime__PullQuotes-05.png\" alt=\"\">\n        <\/picture>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n<p> <strong>An Opportunity To Inspire Others<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the release of her memoir, messages started rolling in from other doctors and professionals, eager to share with Dr Phalime how much her story resonated with theirs. When she was invited to share her story at TEDx in Johannesburg, \u201cI realised that I could tell my story and the lessons I learned on multiple platforms through public speaking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"show-for-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JeHqgambbcI\" width=\"970\" height=\"545\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"show-for-small-only\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JeHqgambbcI\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><sup><em>The doctor who walked away &#8211; Maria Phalime\u2019s TEDx talk<\/em><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her public speaking opportunities grew into a personal coaching business, and now she guides others through the familiar territory of reaching for their dreams, despite the odds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy primary quest in life is to be the very best version of myself I can be. That\u2019s part of the reason I walked away from medicine, and it is the driver of everything I do in my professional and personal life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Phalime continues to write, and she hasn\u2019t ruled out another memoir in the future. She facilitates leadership development courses with UCT, and continues to travel for speaking engagements, but she\u2019s not ready to consider her education complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are all so busy, but that shouldn\u2019t stop us from learning and growing. I think online education addresses the need for continuing professional and personal development in a world where few people have the luxury of being able to take time off work to attend lectures at university or college.
