Because a strong professional network <strong>provides opportunities for learning, collaboration, growth, and exposure.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A strong network also <strong>provides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getsmarter.com\/blog\/workplace-of-the-future-is-here\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">credibility<\/a><\/strong>. Whether you\u2019re applying for a new job or your business is seeking to partner with another company, the prospective employer will do their homework. The larger and more influential your network, the more likely it will be for potential job providers and recruiters to find reassuring information about you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nature of your network also has a direct influence on your level of success. Open networking, as opposed to a closed network, has been proven to be the best predictor of career development, so much so that the top 20 percent of networkers had more open and diverse networks.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Open networks are composed of people who share little to no common connections with the other people in their group. This allows you to gain exposure to new ideas and opportunities, as opposed to hearing the same news over and over again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a closed network where everyone in your group knows everyone else, you\u2019re constantly exposed to the same messaging and principles, and opportunities for development may become limited or repetitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how to build an effective, open, and enduring network:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-build-a-business-network-by-joining-alumni-groups\">1. Some group examples include your high school, college, short course, and even sports team alumni groups, which can instantly extend your reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If these groups don\u2019t exist, create them.<\/strong> It\u2019s possible to track down just about anyone through social media. Creating a group is as simple as defining which platform is more prolific with classmates, and inviting others to join.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider joining several LinkedIn groups as well. Those relevant to your industry and interests are a good place to start, and having valuable conversations in groups is a great way to meet and network with other professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many reasons why you should join or start alumni groups:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can stay connected to the latest trends in your industry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are assured of the quality of your connections<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You gain access to job and development opportunities with like-minded professionals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-make-connections-to-create-a-business-network-offline\">2. You can also gain some insight into who they are, where they come from, and what they\u2019re passionate about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the event finishes and you\u2019re back at home or your hotel, don\u2019t immediately send a LinkedIn invitation.
