Manage yourself<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the fundamental skills of a good manager is the ability to manage yourself, and to do so you need to understand yourself. But in order to be a better manager, you need to <strong>avoid confirmation bias<\/strong> as much as possible when making decisions.<sup>5<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Try these steps to avoid using information incorrectly:<sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Establish a process<\/strong> by identifying the problem you want to solve, establishing the criteria for solving it, then weighing those criteria<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Recognize your biases<\/strong> by imagining yourself holding an opposing viewpoint to your own, playing devil\u2019s advocate with your arguments, and seeking information that counters your perspective<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pay attention to your emotions <\/strong>and actively manage them when making decisions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Continue to question and investigate your assumptions, and be open to being wrong. Flexibility in the face of challenges is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Who you hire matters more than the plans you make<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In any business, there is a large chance of failure. To combat this you need to make sure you <strong>hire the<\/strong> <strong>right kind of people<\/strong> to adeptly face the problems that arise along the way. The widespread disruption wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic has made this more apparent than ever.<sup>7<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stronger managers hire people that are able to make sound decisions in everything from day-to-day activities to crisis situations, and continue to coach and empower their teams to deal with problems when they materialize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recruit the most adaptable problem solvers you can; you\u2019ll need people who can think outside the box, manage their time, and prioritize, plan, and execute strategies effectively to thrive in today\u2019s uncertain business environment.<sup>8<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Talent development is key<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You might have heard of the 10,000-hour rule, which has risen to popularity thanks to Malcolm Gladwell\u2019s book, <em>Outliers<\/em>. Don\u2019t micromanage \u2013 your team doesn\u2019t always need you<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you micromanage, you severely limit your style of management, as well as overburden yourself. Don\u2019t hold back tough feedback<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a common mistake to avoid giving negative feedback because you don\u2019t want to come across as being antagonistic or mean. But it\u2019s also one of the worst managerial mistakes you could make. You might think you\u2019re saving your employee from experiencing negative emotions, but you\u2019re actually robbing them of <strong>valuable, constructive advice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Handing out negative feedback in a constructive way is an art that\u2019s hard to master. Harvard Business Review suggests there are key points to remember when delivering tough advice:<sup>15<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t sandwich your feedback<\/strong> by opening and closing with compliments, as this can make the feedback come across as confusing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Describe the behavior <\/strong>to be corrected or reinforced in purely observational terms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Explain the impact of the behavior<\/strong> so the employee understands what\u2019s at stake<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Outline what you\u2019d like the employee to do<\/strong>, with a goal towards future improvement, not recriminations for past behavior<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8.
