{"id":719,"date":"2016-11-30T06:18:53","date_gmt":"2016-11-30T06:18:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.getsmarter.com\/blog\/?p=719"},"modified":"2018-09-21T09:48:59","modified_gmt":"2018-09-21T09:48:59","slug":"what-is-public-relations-pr-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.getsmarter.com\/blog\/what-is-public-relations-pr-video\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Public Relations? | FAQs Video"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Find out more from Rebecca Cronje, Head Tutor of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getsmarter.com\/courses\/za\/uct-public-relations-short-course\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UCT Public Relations online short course<\/a>, as she answers the question:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h5>\u201cWhat is public relations?\u201d<\/h5>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Learn how PR covers everything, from managing the reputation of a brand or business to creating messages that resonate with specific audiences.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><em><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hZ0JYQ8hMbs\" width=\"1100\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Another way to answer the question \u201c<strong>What is public relations<\/strong>?\u201d is by looking at the description the Public Relations Institute of Southern Africa (PRISA) attribute to the industry:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;Public relations is the management, through communication, of perceptions and strategic relationships between an organisation and its internal and external stakeholders.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">While the face of public relations has changed significantly over time, its basic definition\u00a0remains more or less constant, as it&#8217;s not the purpose of public relations that has changed but rather the &#8220;tools of the trade&#8221; through which it operates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">What makes PR uniquely different to other marketing disciples such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getsmarter.com\/courses\/za\/uct-social-media-short-course\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getsmarter.com\/courses\/za\/uct-digital-marketing-short-course\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">digital marketing<\/a> or advertising, is that it <strong>integrates with trusted third parties to tell a story<\/strong> instead of using a brand or business&#8217;s own means to sell. In other words, PR is fundamentally about <strong>endorsement, trust, and authenticity<\/strong> &#8211; not promotion &#8211; and can take the form of an article on an online publication, an influential blog post, a\u00a0celebrity&#8217;s or expert&#8217;s\u00a0tweet or a radio podcast.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you want an in-demand public relations management reputation, you\u2019ll need a thorough knowledge of communication channels and tools, accompanied by skills in relationship management.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Transcription<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public Relations is the strategic management of a brand, business, organisation or individual\u2019s reputation among its key stakeholders.
