Summary of Job:
The focus of this position is to support the Privacy & Compliance Function of the Legal team at 2U Cape Town, and to provide legal counsel on and address a wide range of compliance matters internally and work closely with stakeholders in different business divisions. The Compliance Associate will further be expected to assist the broader Legal team, and play a facilitating role in implementing controls and safeguards that may be necessary to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory obligations (focussing on Sales, Marketing and Communications divisions).
Key Role and Responsibilities:
Providing the business with legal counsel on compliance and regulatory matters
This includes research and interpretation of international legislation and regulatory frameworks, industry guidance, and best practices (with a focus on marketing, media & communications, privacy & data protection, consumer protection, and public policy) to offer guiding opinions and propose suitable courses of action.
Facilitating the implementation of required best practices, policies and procedures to achieve business goals in alignment with regulatory requirements
This includes ensuring internal policies align with applicable legal / regulatory standards; liaising with a wide range of business stakeholders to ensure implementation of policies and guidelines across the wider organisation; and identifying potential compliance breaches.
Driving compliance culture across the organisation
This includes the training of staff on compliance matters and the facilitation thereof; and supporting the resolution of internal and external stakeholder queries.
Reviewing contracts or other documentation to ensure that vendors / partners comply with company policies and requirements
Education and Experience:
- Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa;
- 2+ years post-qualification experience (at least 4 years total work experience);
- Experience in international commercial and corporate work – advantageous;
- Knowledge in and experience with privacy and data protection laws, including the EU GDPR – advantageous;
- Experience in tech / innovation / marketing industries – advantageous;
- Excellent professional language & writing skills;
- Ability to handle difficult or unexpected issues and business challenges, and to effectively solve problems;
- Ability to implement and drive effective processes.

You will need to establish strong relationships with leaders across the team and within your own division.
