Introduction

According to the Edelman Trust Barometer, none of the four societal institutions that the study measures — government, business, NGOs and media — is trusted by the American workforce, despite a healthy global economy and at-capacity employment at the time of polling.1 By responding to the demand for higher accountability in the workplace, companies can be conscious of the kind of impact they are having on all aspects of society, including economic, social, and environmental, and promote trust in their markets.

The Leading an Ethical Business online program from Yale School of Management (SOM) Executive Education examines how global institutions and leaders can embrace a new way of building trust: by balancing competence with ethical behavior. With a focus on how corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives help leaders and organizations make better decisions and navigate the complexity of today’s modern business environment, this six-week program explores the ethical foundation of a corporate social responsibility framework, and appropriate methods for overcoming conflicts of interest. You’ll explore the business and ethical challenges a company might face when implementing CSR programs, discover how to avoid and overcome conflicts of interest, evade hiring biases, and recognize corruption and how to act upon your values at work. The program culminates in an understanding of the cost of ethical behavior, and the resources to define and align your values in a business context.
