Course overview
The percentage of respondents in a global survey of human capital trends that admit to having clear policies and leaders to manage ethical challenges raised by the future of work.
Deloitte (May, 2020).
The portion of the general population that believes that CEOs should take the lead on change instead of waiting for governments to impose it.
Edelman (Jan, 2020).
Duration: 6 weeks
According to the Edelman Trust Barometer, none of the four societal institutions that the study measures — government, business, NGOs, and media — is trusted by the American workforce, despite a healthy global economy and at-capacity employment at the time of polling.1 By responding to the demand for higher accountability in the workplace, companies can be conscious of the kind of impact they are having on all aspects of society, including economic, social, and environmental, and promote trust in their markets.
The Values-Based Leadership online program from Yale School of Management (SOM) Executive Education examines how global institutions and leaders can embrace a new way of building trust: by balancing competence with ethical behavior. With a focus on how corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives help leaders and organizations make better decisions and navigate the complexity of today’s modern business environment, this six-week program explores the ethical foundation of a corporate social responsibility framework, and appropriate methods for overcoming conflicts of interest. You’ll explore the business and ethical challenges a company might face when implementing CSR programs, discover how to avoid and overcome conflicts of interest, evade hiring biases, and recognize corruption and how to act upon your values at work. The program culminates in an understanding of the cost of ethical behavior, and the resources to define and align your values in a business context.
1 Edelman (2020).
Is this program for you?
This program is relevant to all managers, business leaders, and decision makers who need to be aware of issues around values-based business practices to decide whether or not, and how to promote a positive impact in their sphere of influence. For anyone managing corporate social responsibility initiatives in teams, the program offers an enhanced understanding of CSR frameworks. For non-business leaders or anyone intent on embracing the foundations and opportunities of CSR initiatives, the program explores the ethical challenges a company might face, and how to ensure processes are met and effective measures enforced. Additionally, those in the government and legal professions tasked with upholding and implementing effective ethical standards and processes will benefit from the insights gained on this program.
