Why You Should Constantly Seek Relevance

This is an excerpt from The New Professional’s 2018 Career Guide. Have you got your free copy?

The old career economy prepared young professionals to enter the workforce with a qualification behind their name, reassured by the knowledge that the skills attached to their qualification would keep them relevant throughout their entire career.

The modern economy, now characterised by swift and frequent technological innovation, implementation and change, makes it almost impossible to rely solely on one qualification. Retaining relevance in your career is now harder than ever.

What is relevance?

Author Michael McQueen describes what he calls the “Relevance Curve”: all brands, organisations and ideas naturally progress from emergence to prominence, and finally move on to become obsolete.1

Your position as a working professional on that curve is never concrete. In the modern working world, you need to be constantly seeking relevance in order to stay ahead of new business trends; as well as keep ahead of those entering the working world as each new year passes, equipped with the latest knowledge.

The new career economy

The New Work Mindset, a report published in 2017 speaking to young professionals, claims recent graduates will hold as many as 17 different jobs across five industries throughout their careers.2

This new kind of job economy is illustrated effectively by author, consultant and coach Heather McGowan:

Not only will job descriptions be subject to continued change in this new economy, but 65% of children entering primary school today will ultimately end up working in completely new job types that don’t even exist yet.3

Constantly seeking relevance needs to become your new normal state. Stay ahead of the Relevance Curve, download the New Professional’s 2018 Career Guide to learn how.
