Hi, my name is Sanjay Sarma. I’m a professor at MIT of mechanical engineering, and I’m also Vice President for Open Learning at MIT. I’ve been at MIT almost 21 years and I came to MIT after getting my PhD at the University of California, Berkley, my masters at Carnegie Mellon University, and I spent my formative years and I got my undergraduate degree in India.

In between I worked in the oil industry, I left MIT to do a start-up, so I’ve had a fairly, I guess, a life that has gone through many different stages and countries. As I’ve observed the world, the one thing that strikes me is the opportunity that technology has to fundamentally change both societies and businesses, but also, frankly, the way of life, especially in poor countries. For example, in India where I grew up, technology is leapfrogging.

So the entire country seems to have gone from no phone to smartphone and leapfrogged the entire landline phase. And the Internet of Things to me is one of those leapfrog opportunities, because we just can’t afford to go through the same development process that the United States went through for the rest of the planet. We won’t have a planet left. So the Internet of Things is this great opportunity to rethink the way in which we can improve people’s health, improve wealth, well-being, and also just make life more fun.

And I’m very excited about it and I’m happy to see you interested in this course.
