The ‘big lecture’ is a time-tested, instructional method that dates back to before the printing press. The method that worked then was simple – transmit information orally and have the students transcribe it in their notes.1 To this day, the ‘big lecture’ methodology is praised and practised.2 With the infusion of technology in education, universities now have the opportunity to move beyond the traditional lecture format and provide a higher-education multimedia learning experience.3

You just have to measure the results and you see that tradition doesn’t always mean that something is right4

Different learning styles are often overlooked in higher education, with the preference falling on large lectures and standard testing. It’s important for students to know their learning style and for teachers and professors to cater to them. Being aware of the many ways in which people learn, creates awareness. Combining this awareness with new and effective teaching methods, creates a positive, supportive, and inclusive learning environment for those who don’t perform well under traditional tertiary education strategies.14
