Our Story

  1. The Doors Open

    In 2008, at the tip of Africa, GetSmarter, is founded by brothers Sam and Rob Paddock. The first online course ever presented was Wine Evaluation in partnership with the University of Stellenbosch. Later the same year, Africa’s leading university—the University of Cape Town—agreed to collaborate with GetSmarter.

  2. Reaching 30,000 Students

    By the end of 2013, GetSmarter had helped 30,000 working professionals develop skills they could use to have an immediate impact in their careers. During the same year, GetSmarter welcomed a host of new prestigious institutions on board, including the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) and an industry partner, Penguin Random House.

  3. A Team of 200

    Fuelled by the increased number of courses on offer and the need to continue with the delivery of unrivalled student support, the GetSmarter team grew to 200 employees by the end of 2015. The business would continue to expand in the coming years, growing 120% by the end of the following year alone.

  4. GetSmarter Goes Global

    This was a year of particular significance for GetSmarter. Goldsmiths, University of London became the first international university to present a course in collaboration with GetSmarter: Digital Marketing. Following this leap into international waters, two courses launched soon thereafter with the world’s leading university—The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). After serving students local to Southern Africa for eight years, 2016 saw working professionals enroll from 139 countries. To meet the growing demand, the GetSmarter team grew to more than 360 employees.

  5. The World's Best

    2017 saw GetSmarter continue to form working relationships with a number of the world’s best universities — both locally and internationally — to present a competitive course offering including presentations from HarvardX, the University of Cambridge and more. It was also the year that the Cape Town based company earned the accolade of being the largest acquisition of a South African edtech company when they were bought by American edtech giant 2U, Inc. for $103 million.

  6. 1,000,000 Lives Improved

    GetSmarter remains committed to its Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) to deliver better education and improve the lives of 1,000,000 working professionals by 2030.
